Environment
EnvironmentThe regeneration of Brownfields contributes to a sustainable development of urban areas through the use of existing urban assets. This should ensure that urban expansion is minimised as less Greenfields need to be developed, thereby preserving the urban quality and contributing to the efficient use of existing support systems (e.g. infrastructure); prevention of urban sprawl. The accurate determination of environmental conditions with the potential to impact the revitalisation of potentially contaminated sites, is critical for the success and the local removal of the problems and risks increases the market potential of the site. To ensure early consideration of issues which will affect the sustainability of the development in terms of its construction, its uses, its whole life costs and its impact on the environment, developers should prepare a Sustainable Development Profile for the site.

The environment seminars and workshops were facilitated by the Rostock and Flanders partners. Rostock was appointed as facilitator for the Lyon partner and a joint seminar and workshop has taken place. As the Belgian partners have very strong and successful experience of the implementation of sustainable development in the planning process of new neighbourhoods and business parks they facilitated the seminar and workshop in Belfast.

Seminars

Lyon identified a weakness in their approach to environmental issues in Brownfield regeneration and have learned from the experiences of the Rostock partner. The Belfast partner identified weakness when addressing environment perspectives especially with regards to sustainable planning & development and have learned from the Flanders partner. The Lyon joint seminar & workshop took place in June 2007 while the Belfast seminar took place in early September 2007:

Lyon – 28 & 29 June 2007

presentations & report

Belfast – 3 September 2007

presentations & report

Workshops

The resultant workshops aimed to apply the lessons learned from the environment seminars to specific sites. Lyon hosted a joint seminar & workshop in June 2007. The Belfast workshop took place at the end of October 2007:

Lyon – 28 & 29 June 2007

presentations & report

Belfast – 31 October & 1 November 2007
